The state’s annual Yom Hashoah observance reiterated Illinois Jews’ belief that they are survivors who can pass along pride and sprit to their descendents.

“We owe it to our family members who perished in the Holocaust to carry on and never forget,” State Rep. Laura Fine (D-Glenview) said during the Day of Remembrance service at the Old State Capitol in Springfield. “Our family trees must continue to grow and flourish: as individuals, families, and a community.”

The event not only memorializes those who died, said keynote speaker Doris Fogel of Chicago, but “it also reminds us of the fragility of democracy.” Fogel, 79, escaped as a young child with a stopover in a Shanghai ghetto.

Gov. Pat Quinn also spoke during the event and praised the work of the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center in Skokie.

The governor’s office and the Jewish Federations of Illinois co-sponsor the annual event.
