What appeared to be an improper leak of information from the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office is unfounded, according to Undersheriff Jack Campbell.

The department’s Internal Affairs division says a clerical error in the County Circuit Clerk’s office is to blame. Documents regarding a murder investigation were, in fact, properly released to a local blogger.

“What we’ve learned is that document that our investigator was looking for in the Circuit Clerk’s office couldn’t be found at that time,” says Campbell. “What I found out, in talking to [Circuit Clerk] Tony Libri was that there is a big all-encompassing process with all this paperwork moving from our office, to the state’s attorney’s office, to the clerk’s office.”

Jason Sharp was murdered earlier this year on South Whittier in Springfield. Campbell says those working an investigation would not release information if it wouldn’t further an active case.

Sheriff Neil Williamson considers the matter closed.
