U.S. Sen. Mark S. Kirk (R-Ill.) welcomes the investigations into an anti-violence program championed by the governor.

Kirk wouldn’t go as far as to say he believes crimes were committed in the operation of the Neighborhood Recovery Initiative (NRI), but he is interested in whether any federal grants were misused.

“Whenever we think about violence prevention, you think Justice Department,” Kirk said. “So I will continue to look (at) if that really was the feds that were funding this, then there’s a direct hook for the Congress to get involved.”

The now-defunct program is already being investigated by the U.S. attorney in Springfield and the Cook County state’s attorney. Earlier this week, a panel of state legislators voted to seek subpoena power for its own inquiry.

It’s not the first time Kirk has questioned if the Quinn administration had misused federal grants. Last month, he and the rest of the state’s Republicans in Congress asked for an investigation into whether federal funds used for alleged patronage hires at the Illinois Department of Transportation.
