Schimpf: AG Madigan Has NRI Conflict of Interest

The Republican challenger to Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan says Madigan should be giving testimony, not legal advice, on the Neighborhood Recovery Initiative.

Republican Attorney General nominee Paul Schimpf believes since Madigan served as co-chairman of the Illinois Violence Prevention Authority, which oversaw NRI, it’s a conflict of interest for her to provide legal advice on anything regarding the program. Schimpf says this conflict is not related to Madigan’s father serving as speaker of the Illinois House.

“That’s not what I’m talking about today,” Schimpf said. “What I’m talking about today is she is a material witness in this program that is under investigation both by the Legislative Audit Commission and the Department of Justice.”

For proof that Madigan may have information about the program, Schimpf points to an e-mail sent to Madigan’s office by the former director of the NRI, Barbara Shaw, which asked about the possibility of pay raises for managers in the program soon after the 2010 election.

Madigan’s office has said she does not believe her role in the IVPA constitutes a conflict of interest, and members of the Legislative Audit Commission have gone to Madigan for legal advice.
