Same-sex couples don’t have to wait until June to get married if they come to state’s most populous county.

A federal judge has ruled that Cook County can begin issuing marriage licenses to those couples right away, bypassing the June 1 date set by the same-sex marriage law passed last year. While it’s up to clerks in other counties to decide whether to do the same, Cook County Clerk David Orr says all Illinois couples can come to Cook County if they don’t want to wait.

“The bottom line is people can, and therefore we expect crowds from other places to come here,” Orr said. “Ideally, though, they wouldn’t have to because their county clerks will issue the license as well.”

Orr says his office is bringing in extra staff to handle the rush of couples looking to tie the knot.

Couples with civil unions who want to convert their civil union date to a marriage will still have to wait, as that was not addressed in the ruling.
