Rutherford Backs Off TV Campaign

Illinois Treasurer Dan Rutherford has cancelled reservations for television ads touting his candidacy for the Republican gubernatorial nomination. A former treasurer employee has filed a federal lawsuit accusing Rutherford of sexual harassment and forcing him to do campaign work on state time. Rutherford also faces questions about his workplace judgment after it was reported he shared hotel rooms with his executive assistant, which the treasurer says he did to save money.

Rutherford says he’d like voters to see an independent investigation over allegations of misconduct that his lawyers are keeping private for now. A former employee last week filed a federal lawsuit accusing Rutherford of sexual harassment and forcing him to do campaign work on state time. Rutherford’s lawyer later said the report’s findings would only be released through the courts. Rutherford said Tuesday he is “working on” making the report public and wants the information “out there.”
