Gov. Pat Quinn says he took steps to fix problems in an anti-violence program before it was criticized by the state auditor general.

The audit says there were “pervasive deficiencies” in the $54.5 million program, with expenses going unmonitored and several violent communities left out of the initiative.

Quinn claims he was aware there were problems and worked to solve them.

“There were some problems….document problems, paper work problems,” Quinn said, “and when we spotted that with the agency that was in charge of it—long before any audit came in—we switched that agency from handling the program to a different agency that had a good record.”

Republicans have criticized the program for being set up as a “slush fund” to give Quinn a boost ahead of the 2010 election. The audit has been given to law enforcement to determine if any crimes were committed.
