The Quaker Steak and Lube restaurant at Legacy Pointe in Springfield has shut its doors, perhaps for good.

An employee, speaking on the condition of anonymity says he came to work Tuesday to find the business closed and says he was not given any notice when he was there Monday.

Springfield Economic Development Director Mike Farmer says he has heard rumblings the popular venue was struggling.

“I think they thought there might be more activity out there, to quote one of their executives but I don’t know.  When they made their decision, it was a different economy,” says Farmer.

The restaurant was to celebrate its third anniversary in October.

Farmer says the long-discussed outlet mall near Scheel’s is still a go but could not predict a date for construction; however he says permits for the mall have been applied for.

Call to Quaker’s corporate office in Pennsylvania have not been returned.
