There’s a new face in the race for mayor of Springfield.
Sangamon County Auditor Paul Palazzolo says he’s worked in local government for more than ten years and those skills will serve him well as mayor.
“I respect Mayor [Mike] Houston immensely, I don’t think it’s about being different than him,” said Palazzolo when asked how he would differentiate himself from the current administration. “I think it’s what my talents and skills bring to the role. Every person who serves as mayor brings a new chapter to the city, it’s a different chapter that brings different, unique talents and skills.”
He started a bid for mayor in 2010, but backed out a short time later.
Palazzolo has served as Sangamon County Auditor since 2002. He also served on the Springfield Park Board from 2001 to 2005, and has been involved in a number of area non-profits such as the Salvation Army, Springfield Urban League and the Hoogland Center for the Arts.
The mayoral field could be crowded but at this point it’s undetermined. Mayor Mike Houston hasn’t said whether he’ll run again, and Ward 6 Alderman Cory Jobe has formed an exploratory committee and is expected to make an announcement soon.
