Senators are spending some time listening to the pros and cons of playing poker on the Information Superhighway.
“In Nevada, which has been accepting Internet poker play since April of last year, there has been not a single – not a single – report of underage access,” said John Pappas of the Poker Players Alliance. He says state-of-the-art technology is taking care of age and abuse concerns.
Anita Bedell, leader of an anti-gambling organization, testified that Internet gambling would simply turn any laptop into an unrestricted casino.
Lawmakers did not take a vote, though State Sen. James Clayborne (D-Belleville) signaled the concern that more option only shift business around, rather than create new business, citing conversations he has had with managers at the Casino Queen in East St. Louis – which already competes with casinos in adjoining Missouri.
