Most Illinois Public School Districts Are in Deficit Spending

With grades like these, your parents would send you to your room, or call a tutor, or something.

The Illinois State Board of Education says 62 percent of the districts in the state are in deficit spending. That compares to 32 percent in 2008.

“We are seeing the long-term impact of fiscal crisis playing out in our schools,” says ISBE spokeswoman Mary Fergus.

In the four financial classifications, the number of districts in the lower two, early warning and financial watch, has risen from 112 to 121.

This is all information board members and administrators want the legislature to consider as it ponders $1 billion in possible cuts to elementary and secondary education.
