Pink slips may be in the mail later this month for some Springfield District 186 employees.

Board Vice President Adam Lopez says teaching and support positions will be eliminated as the board approved $5.5 million to be cut from the next budget.

“We will have to vote on the ‘riffing’ (reduction-in-force) and that is when it comes to the board it was actually have names of individuals that will be losing there jobs.  That is what we will vote on.  That will be happening March 17th. That is when notices will go out,” he said.

More than two dozen positions at all levels are on the chopping block along with some support personnel, although at this point it’s unclear exactly how many positions will be lost. Lopez says state aid numbers and collective bargaining will help determine that.

He says the cuts are necessary because previous administrations added programs without a long-term funding strategy. The district faces a $4.7 million shortfall heading into the next fiscal year, and the board says it needs to start rebuilding its cash reserves.
