State Treasurer Dan Rutherford is being accused of misconduct by one of his employees, but he believes the accusation is really an attack from one of his Republican rivals in the race for governor.
Rutherford says the allegations are false, though he declined to describe them. He claims the allegation is being orchestrated by Bruce Rauner.
According to Rutherford, the link is an attorney named Christine Svenson, who had done work for the Rauner campaign in the past, and is now representing the unnamed employee. Rutherford and his attorneys claim Svenson wanted a payment of $300,000 to have the employee “keep it under wraps.”
“You put these dots together, there’s no question in my mind what’s going on here,” Rutherford said. “Someone tried to get $300,000 and is being represented by an attorney that was on Bruce Rauner’s payroll.”
The Rauner campaign says Svenson was paid a one-time fee of $3,500 to review an office space lease last year. Rutherford promises to launch an independent investigation into the allegations.
Rutherford, Rauner and state Sens. Bill Brady and Kirk Dillard are seeking the Republican nomination.
