State Sen. Sam McCann (R-Carlinville) will be missing from the ballot for governor.

“We had several organizations, groups, and individuals come to me early on and say, just in case, we ought to have an insurance policy,” McCann said. “It’s not about me; it’s about the people. And if I were running for governor, I would not be running against Bruce Rauner or Pat Quinn. I would be running for the people of Illinois.”

With Rauner uninterested in taking stands on social issues, and Quinn solidly liberal on same, McCann won’t argue the point that social conservatives have nowhere to go for governor.

Anybody entering the race this late would face an uphill climb to collect 25,000 valid signatures. And McCann’s petitions lacked a name for running mate.

“We’ll see how he reaches out to Downstate,” McCann says of his level of enthusiasm for his party’s gubernatorial candidate. “Mr. Rauner needs to sell himself to my constituents.”
