Mayor Houston: Things Improving in the City

Mayor Houston: Things Improving in the City

Springfield Mayor Mike Houston says the state-of-the-city is much better than the dire financial warnings Illinois Governor Pat Quinn delivered to lawmakers Wednesday afternoon

“I will only guarentee you one thing this afternoon.  The message you will receive today at the Prairie Capital Convention Center will be a better message than the people will be receiving at the state capitol” says Houston in his opening remarks.

Houston touted a public works program to repair the city’s crumbling infrastructure, a much more manageable cash balance in the city’s coffers and,  an attractive downtown business district.

The mayor did not touch on any of the financial challenges the city faces to include large shortfalls in the pension funds for Springfield’s police and fire-fighters.
