If you listen to the Speaker of the Illinois House, you might get the idea 2014 will be a busy year at the Capitol.

In addition to a move to reinforce voting rights, a three percent tax on millionaires, and a non-reduction of the income tax in the air, Speaker Mike Madigan (D-Chicago) says Illinois ought to raise the minimum wage.

“There’s strong support for the minimum wage in the House,” Madigan said. “I think it’s a matter of fairness, a matter of equity. I think you’ll find most of the opposition to raising the minimum wage comes from people who have done pretty well in America, and, for some strange reason, they don’t want others in America to participate in prosperity.”

When a reporter said, “It sounds like you’re talking about Bruce Rauner,” Madigan responded, “Who?”

It sounds like he’s talking about the Republican nominee for governor.

It was also pointed out that the proposal to tax people an extra three percent on all income after $1 million is attracting criticism because it’s not indexed to inflation; after all, a million dollars doesn’t go as far as it used to, nor will it go as far in 2034 as it does now. Madigan brushed that aside.

“That sounds like something an opponent would say,” he said.
