A $14.4 million federally funded Springfield rail project is officially underway.

National and state lawmakers joined local officials to break ground on a new rail underpass at 10th and Carpenter Streets Thursday.

Mayor Mike Houston says this will give the east side easier access to the medical district, plus provide other safety upgrades.

“It is not just a matter that we are improving this particular location. We will be closing three at-grade crossings when this project is complete,” says Houston.

The rail underpass is part of the larger $350 million Springfield Rail Improvement Project, which will consolidate all passenger and freight rail traffic to the 10th street corridor.
