Lincoln’s Tomb Re-Opens

You can once again visit the final resting place of Abraham Lincoln.

The interior of the Lincoln Tomb in Springfield is re-opening this week after being closed for four months of repair work. That included filling in cracks in the stonework, fixing water damage to the ceiling, and repainting. Minor stuff, according to Illinois Historic Preservation Agency spokesman Chris Wills, but he says it was important to get it done before a certain anniversary comes up.

“So mostly it was just to make sure the place did not fall into disrepair and really looks its best leading up to the 150th anniversary of Lincoln’s death,” Wills said.

Wills says the tomb figures heavily into the plans for those events in 2015, along with other sites associated with Lincoln in Springfield.

The repaired tomb is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., seven days a week.
