Lincoln May Have Written on This

A slate that a teacher used back in the 1800s to help children learn how to write may not be worthy of a spot in a museum — unless one of those children was Abraham Lincoln.

In a news release, the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library Museum in Springfield says just such a slate has been donated by descendants of a teacher who taught Lincoln and other children in a backwoods cabin.

The museum says the slate that’s 16 inches by 12 inches was likely used by Caleb Hazel to explain lessons to the whole class as well as by the individual students when they were called up to practice their writing or arithmetic.

The slate will be displayed with a piece of paper on which Lincoln solved math problems
