A revamped Lincoln Heritage Museum is set to open at Lincoln College.

The 70-year-old museum’s collection of Lincoln artifacts has been moved to a facility with five times more exhibition space than its former home. Museum director Ron Keller says having more space wouldn’t be enough to stand out from the dozens of other Lincoln attractions in the state. He says the museum emphasizes Lincoln’s character, not just his accomplishments.

“We thought why not make this museum focus on those character qualities that we, as human beings, can emulate,” Keller said. “Not that he was perfect, because he was not, and we’re very upfront with his weaknesses, and failings, and error. But the fact is that we can learn from these things.”

The first floor of the museum will house most of the historical artifacts, such as locks of hair from Abraham Lincoln and members of his family, and an 1818 letter signed by Lincoln’s father, Thomas. The second floor is more interactive, according to Keller, with displays that visitors are encouraged to touch in order to trigger audio and video discussing different parts of Lincoln’s life.

The museum’s grand reopening is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday.
