Juvenile Sex Offense Numbers May Surprise You

Juvenile Sex Offense Numbers May Surprise You

Of all the trouble Illinois juveniles can get into, committing a sex crime is relatively infrequent. The numbers may surprise you.

The Illinois Juvenile Justice Commission’s new report, “Improving Illinois’ Response to Sexual Offenses Committed by Youth,” takes a look. Chairman and retired judge George Timberlake of Mount Carmel says kids who do this typically do it just once, and respond to treatment.

“For adults, that’s a different conversation,” says Timberlake. “But for juveniles, what we have found is it’s rare and declining. In 2004, there were over 400 arrests for juvenile sex offending.”

By 2010, the number was 232.

Timberlake says the recidivism rate is low – seven percent, according to a separate report.
