Jobe: Shut Down Bel-Aire Motel in Ten Days, Or Else

Shut down the Bel Aire Motel yourself, or I’ll draft an ordinance to do it. That’s the message Ward 6 Alderman Cory Jobe has for Springfield Mayor Mike Houston.

Jobe is giving the mayor ten business days to act. But will the people who live there have enough time to relocate? Jobe says this isn’t a new problem and shouldn’t come as a surprise.

“I’ve been asking for the administration, for quite a while now, to work with Springfield Housing Authority, work with other social service agencies to find adequate alternative housing,” Jobe said.

Jobe likens Bel Aire’s problems to MacArthur Park — that property deteriorated quickly and nothing was done until city officials demanded action. The difference here, Jobe says, is an out of state owner who doesn’t care about the property.

The Bel-Aire is currently for sale with a price tag exceeding $700,000.
