The Illinois Republican Party has a new leader.

The GOP’s state central committee on Saturday unanimously elected Cook County Commissioner Tim Schneider as party chairman.

In a statement, Schneider calls Illinois a one-party state “in desperate need of a change.” He says Republicans will “work tirelessly” to defeat Gov. Pat Quinn and other Democrats in November.

Schneider is a small business owner from the Chicago suburb of Bartlett. He is a former Hanover Township trustee and highway commissioner and has served on the county board since 2007.

Schneider replaces Jack Dorgan, who is stepping down to join Republican candidate for governor Bruce Rauner’s campaign.

Schneider will serve a four-year term. He says he wants to work to expand the Republican party in Illinois.
