IAAFC Expands Its Territory

IAAFC Expands Its Territory

A newly signed law will expand the responsibilities of the Illinois African American Family Commission.

The commission has been focused on monitoring legislation and programs that target African-Americans in the state. The new law changes portions of a 2004 act, adding language to switch the commission’s role to advising the governor and General Assembly, as well as other state agencies.

One of the sponsors of the legislation, State Rep. Ken Dunkin (D-Chicago), says the goal is to make sure those communities aren’t being ignored by state government. “There’s a disconnect when it comes to agency and deliverables compared to our community. The numbers are horrific,” Dunkin said. “Our state government is one component of trying to resolve it.”

The commission was created in 1994.
