An investigation has begun into human remains found over the weekend.

Sangamon County Deputy Coroner Jim Allmon said via news release that a Rochester resident contacted Rochester Police Saturday to report the discovery. An autopsy is planned for Tuesday.

The coroner’s office wouldn’t say where specifically the remains were found, when specifically they were found or who specifically found them. It cites the suspicious nature of the investigation, but sources say the body was found in the 300 block of Park St.

Authorities are expected to release more information after Tuesday’s autopsy.

Rochester Police couldn’t answer any questions as the investigation’s been turned over to the Illinois State Police, but Rochester provided this written statement:

“A resident of Rochester contacted the Rochester Police Department with a report of having found possible human remains on the resident’s property. The Rochester Police Department responded to the call and has requested the Illinois State Police be the primary investigating agency in this matter.”
