Gov. Quinn Defends His Request to Delay the Budget Address

Gov. Pat Quinn is defending his decision to push back the date of his budget address.

Quinn says his request to move the address from February 19th to March 26th is due to the scope of the speech, which his office claims will lay out a five-year budget plan. Quinn points out that delaying the address has happened under previous governors.

“Republican governors in the past who have asked for a later time, and that was granted,” Quinn said. “I really think it’s something that is important for the public to have a blueprint that not only charts out the fiscal year ahead, but also the next five years.”

Quinn says the temporary income tax increase due to expire in the middle of the next fiscal year will be addressed in the speech, but wouldn’t offer any specifics on what he’ll propose to do with it.

Several Republican candidates for governor criticized Quinn for moving the date, claiming it’s politically motivated, since it’s now scheduled for the week after the Illinois primary.
