Bruce Rauner is on the road, having launched a statewide bus tour.

Last week, one of his opponents in the Republican gubernatorial primary in Illinois, state Treasurer Dan Rutherford, said it’s the sort of thing he does in his own campaigns. Now, another opponent is criticizing the whole idea.

State Rep. Jil Tracy (R-Quincy), running mate of State Sen. Kirk Dillard (R-Hinsdale), told reporters on a conference call someone who goes around the state on a bus with paid staff is not someone voters can relate to, adding Rauner’s spent most of his time “in the Loop in Chicago,” as opposed to campaigning Downstate. Tracy also called Rauner a “Chicago insider” and his tour a “gimmick.”

“There’s no question Bruce Rauner’s trying to buy the race with his millions and millions of dollars,” says another gubernatorial hopeful, State Sen. Bill Brady (R-Bloomington), adding he believes himself to be the front-runner. “Our base of support, because of the last election, is further echoed by the fact that I’m the only one who had the leadership skills to work and pass meaningful pension reform.”

Both said they would support the Republican nominee in November.
