The first day of classes for Springfield School District 186 students went well for staff and students Monday according to Superintendent Jennifer Gill.

“It is a great day. Schools are back in session.  Myself and each of my cabinet members were out in every school today to see how things were going,” Gill says.

Now, School Board President Mike Zimmers says he is encouraging principals to invite the public into the schools during the day.

“We as a school district need to communicate, communicate, communicate.  Not only with our parents but with the community about the good things we are doing in our schools.  I don’t want to just talk about it but I want to invite people in,” says Zimmers.

First day count of students stood at about 14,500 which about the same level as last year.

Zimmers is challenging the school administrators to reach out to community groups and local businesses to get involved.

The Ball-Chatham School District’s first day of class is Wednesday.
