Politicians and the families of deceased police officers gathered in Springfield on Thursday for Police Officers Memorial Day.

Three officers who died last year while on duty were honored: Illinois State Police Trooper James Sauter and Pontiac Officer Casey Kohlmeier were struck by vehicles while on duty. Investigator Cuauhtémoc Estrada of the Cook County Sheriff’s Department of Corrections was shot while trying to protect his daughter and her boyfriend.

Pam Robtoy spoke at the event. Her fiancé, a U.S. marshal, was killed while serving a warrant in 2011.

“I began to view that the meaning of being a survivor was the calling to live a life with more purpose. To pay it forward with others that have been in the position that I have been and see if I could possibly give them some comfort in these times,” Robtoy said.

Four historic honorees were also acknowledged: Village Marshal Charles Rose of Kampsville (1911), Deputy Sheriff Charles Haney of Livingston County (1917), Cook County Sheriff’s Police Officer Robert McCarthy (1931) and Cook County Correctional Officer Leo Nicholas (1932).
