U.S. Senator Dick Durbin is in favor of sending a limited amount of military aid to Ukraine.

That would consist of items such as fuel, tires, and sleeping bags, but Durbin won’t rule out giving more to help Ukraine defend itself from Russia.

“I want to make sure they have that capacity,” Durbin said, “and I think, beyond nonlethal aid, we have to put on the table the possibility of small arms sales. I don’t think that’s gonna provoke Russia beyond what they’ve done today, and Ukraine needs it.”

Durbin has previously ruled out sending US troops to Ukraine, and says the country isn’t asking for that kind of assistance. The Senate is expected to consider the aid package this week.

Ukrainian troops have begun pulling out of the Crimea region, which was annexed by Russia last week. Durbin and other US officials have said the referendum that justified that annexation was illegal.
