Durbin Says GOP Cooperation Over Debt Ceiling All Politics

U.S. Senator Dick Durbin says the deal to raise the debt ceiling was all politics on the part of Republicans.

The measure to allow the government to borrow more money to pay its bills passed through the House and Senate without any conditions attached. Durbin doesn’t think it’s a sign of bipartisan cooperation, but rather election year strategy.

“No, I think…it is largely political,” Durbin said. “They knew that the low point for the Republican Party was the shutting down of our government for 16 days, and they didn’t want to remind people that they did this again.”

No Republican voted for the measure in the Senate, and only 28 supported it in the House. The debt limit won’t have to be raised again until March 2015.
