U.S. air strikes in Northern Iraq are of concern to U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.).

U.S. warplanes made a second wave of airstrikes Friday against the militants who have besieged a religious group and threatened the city of Irbil.

“I understand the president’s motivations. I don’t quarrel with what he has concluded. But I think it is very obvious to all of us Iraq is sadly descending into chaos, and unless the Iraqi people step up to govern their own country, protect their own country, fight for their own country, there are no numbers of American troops that can do it for them,” Durbin said.

Durbin says he spoke with the White House chief of staff, who promised him this was strictly an air mission, and that U.S. troops will not be returning to Iraq. He says to those who want American soldiers in Iraq again, he says history has shown that we cannot fix what is broken in Iraq.

Since Independence Day falls during the work week, members of St. Richard Catholic Church celebrated the holiday on Sunday, June 30, 2013, with a picnic-style outing complete with fireworks that could be seen throughout the northeast Jackson, Miss. neighborhood.
