Springfield Police are investigating what they say was an “agitated man” on an SMTD bus.

The man reportedly talked to a Springfield Mass Transit District driver about a gun. The driver reportedly got nervous and notified his dispatcher, who in turn notified police. The man didn’t get on that bus and smashed the window of the next bus when he wasn’t allowed on.

Shortly thereafter, the general manager of the Fairfield Inn. on Freedom Drive says a black man, likely in his 30’s about 5’10” wearing all black, walked through the lobby. No weapon was shown.

All the hotel’s guests were brought to the lobby and evacuated; where they stayed with police. Authorities searched the hotel and didn’t find him. The scene, as of 12:30 Tuesday afternoon, has been cleared.

Police are searching for the man. Non one has confirmed whether he walked into the hotel with a gun, but police are acting as though he may be armed given his reported conversations with the bus driver.
