Cuts Are on the Way to IHPA

Cuts Are on the Way to IHPA

Illinois officials say budget cuts will force them to consider cutting hours at some state historic sites after the Labor Day holiday.

Illinois Historic Preservation Agency Director Amy Martin says her agency is working on specifics and will try to maintain hours as much as they can at popular sites, like those involving Abraham Lincoln. The agency’s budget was cut 19 percent for the fiscal year that started July 1.

Martin says the agency wanted to wait until after Labor Day to accommodate those with travel plans.

Agency spokesman Chris Wills says the agency is talking with legislative leaders about restoring the money to its budget early next year.

Agency data show more than 1.3 million people visited historic sites in Springfield and Petersburg last year.
