Not all school activities were cancelled Thursday. Students received the day off but school sports will take place.

Despite Springfield School District 186’s decision to call-off school because of the frigid weather, interim Superintendent Bob Hill decided to go ahead with the City Boys’ Basketball Tournament.  He says the tournament is a voluntary activity and people can choose to stay home but, adds there is a financial aspect to the decision to play.

“We are entered into contract for rental of the facility that we we would be liable for and if we didn’t play these game, rescheduling these games would be somewhere between a nightmare and impossible,” says Hill.

Hill adds it is not a matter of athletics over academics but, rather an issue of safety for younger students.  The Prairie Capital Convention Center is playing host to the three day tourney which runs through January 23-25.
