The Springfield City Council will debate an ordinance next week requiring the city’s zoning commission to hold public hearings about where medical marijuana growing operations could be held in the city.

As of now, corporation counsel Todd Greenburg says according to state law, a grow center could open in downtown Springfield.

“If a dispensary got a permit from the State of Illinois, currently it could locate in the downtown area and it would be grandfathered,” says Greenburg. State law requires certain setbacks from schools and residential areas.

However, Alderman Gail Simpson says she is bothered about the lack of information from the Houston administration and wants a map that Greenburg says has already been drawn up delineating where cultivation centers could be located.

The new law says one cultivation center may be opened in each state police district and the Springfield City Council is grappling with how to distribute a license should one be granted.
