City Attorney Confirmation on Hold

Springfield Mayor Mike Houston will continue to wait to see if aldermen will approve his choice for the next city attorney.

Former Bloomington city attorney J. Todd Greenburg was scheduled for confirmation this week, but was out of the country on a cruise.

“There were several questions that were asked of Mr. Greenburg, and I know he’s been on vacation on a cruise and he hasn’t been available,” said Ward 3 Alderman Doris Turner.

Greenburg sent a letter to aldermen and the mayor on New Year’s Day, noting he’d be out of town on vacation between Jan. 5 and Jan. 12. Ward 7 Alderman Joe McMenamin didn’t take kindly to that.

“You and Mayor Houston should have informed the Council earlier and prior to the Committee of the Whole meeting if you intended that meeting to be our only opportunity to question you regarding your pending appointment,” McMenamin said in an e-mail reply to Greenburg.

Mayor Houston, when questioned after Tuesday’s City Council meeting, said aldermen were informed in advance of Greenburg’s vacation and said there was plenty of time for questions.

“He had offered to meet with each of the members of the city council on an individual basis to answer questions,” said Houston. “I’m not sure what additional questions there would be after the Committee of the Whole meeting.”

Houston believes Greenburg will be confirmed once he shows up. Some aldermen question the choice as Greenburg clashed with Bloomington officials before his retirement.
