Authorities have identified a man whose body was discovered inside Farmington’s old high school two weeks after a fire heavily damaged the building in the central Illinois city.
Farmington police say the body is that of Emmanuel Cervantes of West Lafayette, Indiana.
Police Chief Carl Powell says preliminary autopsy results indicate Cervantes died of smoke and soot inhalation in last month’s fire.
Powell says authorities still don’t know how Cervantes ended up inside the building, which is now known as the Old School Center.
The man’s body was discovered May 29 after owners of the building noticed an odor coming from the third floor, where the fire started.
He was last seen on May 14 walking away from a park in Chillicothe.
