Bergdahl Prisoner Swap: Senators Disagree

Bergdahl Prisoner Swap: Senators Disagree

Illinois’ two U.S. senators disagree about the decision to swap Taliban prisoners held by the U.S. for an American soldier.

U.S. Sens. Mark S. Kirk and Dick Durbin were among the lawmakers who were shown a video of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl in captivity. That was enough to convince Durbin that a quick rescue had been the right choice.

However, US Senator Mark Kirk disagrees. He thinks the swap will put other Americans serving abroad at risk of being captured. He says it sets a terrible precedent.

Durbin’s Republican challenger in this year’s Senate race, State Senator Jim Oberweis, also disagreed with the swap, saying the president needed approval from Congress
