Despite bitter cold, a tentful of people from the American Legion and related organizations paid tribute to Abraham Lincoln on the 205th anniversary of his birth Wednesday.

It was the 80th annual event, continuing a tradition begun by World War I vets. Music, speeches and a ceremonial wreath laying celebrated the anniversary.

β€œI think President Lincoln, history has proven, that he was a very skilled public figure, a very skilled public servant, and a very skilled leader,” said State Sen. Sam McCann (R-Carlinville). β€œand he would do a little bit of both,” patting lawmakers on the back and kicking them in the rear, were he to walk into the state Capitol today.

Lincoln was born Feb. 12, 1809, in Kentucky.
