Two accidents on Dirksen Pkwy. injured seven people, and they were related.

The first crash happened around 5:16 Friday at the intersection of Dirksen and Nichols, where a vehicle allegedly ran a stop sign. A truck heading north on Dirksen hit the car on the driver’s side, that crash resulted in two life threatening injuries. The driver was exctricated. The driver of the northbound vehicle did not suffer life threatening injuries, according to Springfield Fire Chief Ken Fustin.

One of the ambulances left that scene and headed north on Dirksen, where medics were tending to one of the crash victims in traumatic arrest — they were performing CPR. When turning west on Clear Lake Ave., a GMC SUV hit the ambulance head on causing another serious crash at around 5:40.

“All traffic was stopped as the ambulance entered the intersection,” said Springfield Police Lt. Bill Neale. “A vehicle traveling westbound on Clear Lake came through the light and the ambulance struck it, rolling it over.”

Police had set up somewhat of a barricade and had stopped all other traffic from entering the intersection. The ambulance had lights, sirens and air horns activated.

That accident resulted in four injuries which police say are not life threatening, one of those injured is a Springfield firefighter.

As the scene was being cleared, another accident occurred shortly before 6:00, though it appeared to be a fender bender as the two drivers were looking at the damage.
