A School Finance Bill Could Come This Year

A state senator who spent much of 2013 studying how Illinois can improve education funding said Thursday that a bill could come together this year.

State Sen. Andy Manar (D-Bunker Hill) told the Governor’s Rural Affairs Council in addition to doing a better job of allocating money based on need – he said less than half the state’s kindergarten through 12th grade education money is distributed as such – the state should more closely consider the per-pupil funding recommendation of the Education Funding Advisory Board.

“Our group believes that we should not ignore that, simply because it’s a pretty big gap – in the billions – between where we are today and funding the adequacy recommendations of EFAB,” Manar said, “but we believe that we should embrace it, and we should at least set in motion a path to get us there, so we should build to that number.”
