2014 Could Be a Good Year for Corn

Illinois farmers are making progress on planting corn.

Corn planted advanced from 32 percent to 43 percent over the last week, according to the weekly USDA crop progress report — but most of the planting was in Central and Southern Illinois. Northern Illinois is still at 12 percent, and that’s weather-related, says USDA crop statistician Mark Schleusener.

“There was some rain last week almost everywhere around the state, it was a wet week, and for some places it’s a continuing of wet weeks and they really haven’t had a chance to get the planters going. We’re also seeing some soil temperature reports still under 50 degrees (F), again in northern areas,” he said.

Eight percent of the corn has emerged, up from 2 percent.

Topsoil moisture statewide is 77 percent adequate and 14 percent surplus, though some fields in need of rain can be found in the western part of the state. However, no part of Illinois is in any stage of drought for the first time in a long time, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor.
