Stevie Nicks: ‘Prince wanted romance’

Fleetwood Mac singer Stevie Nicks has revealed Prince was interested in turning their relationship romantic while she helped him record his legendary song, Purple Rain.

The soul superstar recruited the Landslide hitmaker to give expert advice on his now-iconic song, but Nicks insists that behind the sombre lyrics of the track, Prince was keen on taking their friendship to the next level.

In an interview with Mojo magazine, Nicks admits, “I’ve still got it (the demo cassette) – with the whole instrumental track and a little bit of Prince singing, ‘Can’t get over that feeling’, or something. I told him, ‘Prince, I’ve listened to this a hundred times but I wouldn’t know where to start. It’s a movie, it’s epic.

“The olive branch of him giving me that cassette was huge, but I think he would have liked a romance with me, too.”

While Nicks, who previously admitted that she turned down the singer’s request to pen the lyrics for the 10-minute track, graciously declined his advances, they continued to spend time together, including a night when Prince offered to pick her up after a Fleetwood Mac concert to drive her back to his home.

She reveals, “We get into his purple Camaro and bomb out onto the freeway at 100mph (miles per hour). I’m terrified, but kind of excited, too… (Later) I get on the plane and the rest of the band are like (drum fingers, rolls eyes). I’m like, ”What? Nothing happened.'”
